Hey...This isn't Gundam Wing. I was tricked!

Summary:

When Gundam Seed was announced in 2003, I thought it would turn out the be the next Wing with its interesting cast of characters. Boy, was I wrong….

Review:

I watched Gundam Seed when it first aired on Toonami back in 2004. I was very excited about it since I got a kick out of the other Gundam series that came and went on the same network. After taping a few episodes, I watched them both at once because I know that the first episode would be slow until the next episode. Well, I was wrong: the first and second episode didn’t go anywhere. Maybe it made sense for regular Gundam fans.

The first episode of Seed starts off with a bunch of evil guys (including a Char/Zechs lookalike) talking about taking over the colonies. Then we see the main character, Kira, being approached by his classmates. It’s time for class! Later on, some of the good guys of the Earth Federation Force-ish organization are ambushed by the bad guys from the Char copycat’s personal army. Then a white haired guy attacks a colony–the same colony that Kira lives on–and shakes up a military base. Sounds familiar?

The first episode is pretty much like the first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam, with a touch of Gundam Wing. The second episode was like the first as well, but at least we get to see some interaction between Kira and that girl who works on that ship that looks a lot like White Base. I did manage to watch a few more episodes until I couldn’t take it anymore. I eventually watched more of it to see if I would change my mind…It didn’t happen.

My analysis of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed:

I was expecting something like Gundam Wing–but with the first Gundam mixed in–and better. I do give it credit for not totally abandoning the most important aspect of any Gundam series: the pink Haro! Kira has the personality of Heero, Trowa, Quatre and Chang Wufei combined! (Duo had a “happy” personality, so I will keep him out.) I have made up my mind that I will not view anything relating to Gundam Seed–ever! I will stick with the older Gundam series, thank you very much.
