Top 5 Series for Hardcore Otaku

Aug 31st, 2007 | By Sanjo-chan | Category: Anime & Manga

Holy cow! It’s been about a week since I’ve made an entry that wasn’t about WoW. I have made a list of top 5 anime that is “Otaku friendly”. As in anime that is worthy of being defended by losers with nothing better to do than flame others on internet message boards for disliking it. Without further ado, here is the Top 5 Series for Hardcore (or shall I say, “Haddo-kore”) Otaku. A word of warning: If you find this post offensive, then stop reading it and go find something to do other than beating up other fans. ;)

1. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

For those who have not watched the series, MoHS is about a very bossy girl, Haruhi, who “gathers” key members to her recently established “SOS Brigade” school club. The first episode starts off with a poorly made home video, who Haruhi directs for the club. The episode is funny, but it doesn’t make sense. The second episode introduces the cast of MoHS, which should have been the first episode….

Haruhi Suzumiya is on the top of the list because it has been getting ALOT of hype since it’s review on AnimeTV. If there was an award for the most overrated anime series of 2007, this show should receive it. Haruhi has appeared as a featured series in every anime magazine in the US and has created quite a buzz on anime forums and other blogs. I have not seen many episodes of the show, but it is starting to get on my nerves (the hype, that is). The series is also known for the popular ending theme “Hare Hare Yukai”, incorporated with the “Haruhi Dance”, which has been spreading across anime conventions around the world.

2. Lucky Star

The next big anime next to Haruhi Suzumiya. Lucky Star happens to be produced by the same studio as Haruhi. It has yet to be licensed, and the R2 Limited Edition DVD Set sold out as soon it was released. Lucky Star is about…nothing? Well, it’s basically another anime with cute adolescent girls (a’ la Azumanga Daioh) talking nonsense about the way they eat snacks and video games. Another show worth watching, if you can get past the first episode. Check out my “nutshell” review of the first episode. That’s pretty much the whole episode in the summary, so there’s spoilers. :P

Lucky Star is also noted for a popular opening theme: “Motteke! Serafuku”:

3. Kanon

I have not watched this show…yet…and probably never will. Kanon (not to be confused with the Vampire anime, Karin) has been the butt of Otaku culture in 2006. Every anime blog I’ve been to, there’s always an entry on the recent episode. Why does Kanon attract alot of fans? One word: Girls. Pretty much like the above shows I mentioned. Kanon is about girls and… food? Whenever a girl eats or drink something delicious, they gain “special powers”! Not really…(just a joke!). Kanon is pretty much a fanservice anime, like Air, with a Soap Opera-like storyline. I could be wrong, though…

4. Azumanga Daioh

This is actually the best anime I have ever watched. EVER! It’s an insult that this is included on the list, but it is undoubtedly the best anime series in the fandom, whether you like it or not. This is another anime about girls and school, as previously mentioned. There are five girls - or more, as they are introduced later in the series. My favorite character is Sakaki. She has an secret obsession with animals, especially cats. She always passes by an emotionless cat that bites every time her hand goes near it. Poor Sakaki. This show was made in 2003, but it will remain a favorite forever. If you’re just getting into anime, or have been in the anime genre for a long time, check this series out! If you hate, that’s too bad. :(

5. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed

Finally, the last anime on my list. This is the worse anime in the Gundam franchise! It’s overrated and the characters are unattractive. Kira, the protagonist of Gundam Seed, always has his panties up in a bunch. I guess his ancestors were Amuro Rei and Heero Yuy. Not only the main character’s angst that drives away the “integrity” of the show, it’s the story. I guess I’m getting tired of the *Insert abbreviations of colony era and year here* stuff. The Seed fanbase is just like Kira… They complain about the Live Action G-Savior movie and every Gundam game ever released.
