Realm: Remora

Ah, Remora. The first–and only–server I played on. I had brief stints on Ragnarok (the server) and Carbuncle, but I made good friends on Remora. I made more than ten friends on this server–three of them I dropped after a couple of days.

Unfortunate Events

1) During the first few hours of playing FFXI, a player decided to help me out. He showed me the shop to buy spells, he helped me gain a couple of levels–every little thing he did to help a newbie out. Then the time came when I had to log off. I only spent a few hours playing that night, as I was tired and growing ill from a flu (during the Christmas season). After I made my announcement of leaving so early, he responded with a “Bye…F___ U”.

2) There were bad players I met while in parties. One day I was leveling up with a group on Qufim Island, inside the castle. A White Mage in our party did not like the way the other Red Mage in the party was handling things. Thanks to the Red Mage’s blunders, we died a few times, but that was to be expected. He suggested kicking him and finding a better replacement. I sent a whisper to the leader, suggesting he should kick the White Mage instead. Following an argument on the decision to replace the WHM and some yelling from the 5 of us, we found a better healer. 10 minutes later after we resumed playing, the WHM was running around the castle suspiciously. After seeing /shouts from other players, it was him trying to PK us with this mob…

3) I was kicked out of a Linkshell because the leader didn’t like players who “hop” between different Linkshells. Another member was removed 20 minutes before I was. I did not catch the reason why, as I was fighting mobs in an EXP party, but the leader claimed that she was a “spy”. Too bad he didn’t accept such players. Switching Linkshells is one of my favorite features in FFXI. There are different Linkshells for one purpose: Dynamis, Garrisons, Crafting Guilds (i.e.: Goldsmithing, Fishing, etc) and Faction-specific (i.e.: A Linkshell just for Bastokan players). And there are many of Linkshells just for RP. I know it’s disappointing when a player asks for help from Linkshell A, then switch to Linkshell B, that the owner of Linkshell A may not know about, for help. I had doubts about this Linkshell anyway, thanks to this Linkshell message:

Linkshell members get resurrections for free. Otherwise, a 5000 gil fee is required. No exceptions.

The Verdict: I had a lot of fun on Remora. Although it seemed that every time I meet a new player, I never see him again two months later. However, there is one player who I owe a lot. The last time I logged on, which was in November 2006 (Right before I started playing WoW), his Paladin made it to level 75. With his Paladin complete, he leveled up his Beastmaster, which was 14 levels away from 75. If you’re reading this, I thank you for all the times you helped me and other LS members. We weren’t that big of a group, but we stuck together. TheTrueAlliance was the reason I stayed in Vana’diel until the end.

There are more incidents that occurred on Remora, but this is enough. Also, if you look around Final Fantasy XI message boards, such as GameFAQs‘ FFXI board there are many threads about the elitist drama on Remora. This is probably because Remora was a destination when Square-Enix offered free World transfers from crowed servers. Remora was a target realm for players on the Asura server–claimed to be the worst server in FFXI, due to its economy.

  1. Wow, you did play a lot of online games. I never play FFXI before. Do you have any nice screenshots to share?

Apple’s last blog post..Dare to Eat an Egg from Centuries ago?

  2. Yep. I have A LOT of screenshots from FFXI. I have some already posted under the Final Fantasy XI category, but there’s more where that came from..perhaps I’ll write an adventure log soon, like I did for my Warlock on WoW…but with more screenshots. ^^
