How do you feel about Subs or Dubs?
This is a very controversial discussion in the anime community: Subbed vs. Dubbed. It seems the majority of anime lovers, who have been fans for more than 5 years, say subbed, while newbies who watch their anime on [Adult Swim] say dubbed. Honestly, this situation has been getting out of hand. Many anime forums I visit, I see a lot of asinine comments, such as “The Naruto dub sucks a$$,” which bothers me the most.
For me, it depends on the dub actors. I grew up watching dubbed anime. I’ve been through Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing–just about every anime that aired on Toonami back in 1999-2001. Watching subbed anime was a challenge for me, as a newbie. I would get disappointed when I wasn’t able to hear English speaking actors. Eventually, I grew into it, and I now watch many subbed anime, from Bleach to Naruto, everyday. However, watching subbed anime doesn’t stop me from watching the same thing, dubbed.
I do not watch the Naruto dub, not because the dub is “bad”… It is that I have other better things to do on a Saturday night. Plus, I’m a “casual” Naruto follower, since I’m a way behind in the manga and anime. The last time I saw Naruto, the voices weren’t that bad. However, Naruto’s voice needs work. (”Believe it!” much?)
The only dubs I really dislike are Love Hina and One Piece. One Piece is no longer be the butt of the dub argument since FUNimation took over the license. I think the actors are perfect for the roles (Christopher Sabat -> Zoro for the win). When I watched the 4Kids dub (big mistake), I lost interest in One Piece–thanks to Luffy’s voice actor. Now I would like to get back into it since a better company has hold of it.

I enjoy hearing the anime in English, makes rapid-fire translation and quick subtitle-reading unnecessary. At the same time though, I do enjoy watching subbed anime. I’m more of the mind to take it how I can get it.
I believe that the quality of the dub is determined by the performance of the voice actors, translation, and editing. I like the Digimon, 02, and Digimon Tamers dubs, for example, they’re pretty edited and a lot of the culture references had to be changed for the American audience, but I thought the actors did a superb job.
In regards to Weiss Kreuz, Naruto, and One Piece though – I can’t watch the dubs. The voices are fairly poorly matched, I dislike the fact that the editors felt the need to alter entire scenes of dialogue to suit their needs, especially since in some instances it alters the personality of the character significantly. And of course, in regards to Naruto. I hate that damn repetitive “Believe It!” x_X If you couldn’t translated dattebayo into something less corny then just cut it out or change his speech pattern to suggest he wasn’t raised properly and it shows in his manner of speaking.

I prefer subbed. No dubbed, please. Original voices is always the best. I rather watch anime without subbed rather than dubbed. Watching subbed, you can get the feel more and at the same time, you can learn the Japanese language.
I encourage you to grab hold on One Piece subbed. That’s really a great anime and my favorite. ^_^
