I’ve been watching this anime for a while, but never really got into it. I finally got around to watching an episode the other day while running a small anime marathon. The series’ popularity is annoying, but every episode is pretty entertaining… The episode starts off with Yuki explaining to Kyon the truth of Haruhi the fact that she’s actually an alien. Kyon couldn’t believe her at first, but he eventually understood why Haruhi acts so strange and goes to great lengths to get what she wants.

This episode introduces a new character, Koizumi (who was actually introduced in Episode 4, thanks to the producers idea of running the series out of order) to S.O.S. Dan (Brigade / 団). After asking what the club does (Finding extraterrestrial stuff), he joins immediately without a second thought. The next day, Kyon drops by the club room to find Haruhi harassing poor Mikuru by forcing her to put on a maid outfit (as usual), and takes humiliating photos of her as a possible bribe in the future (like the episode with the computer club). Later, Haruhi declares that the popularity of SOS Dan is soaring (though there are now 4 members besides her). This calls for a SOS Brigade outing!

Around 9 AM at Kitaguchi Station, Kyon and the others meet up at a McD’s knockoff restaurant. They take straws to split the group up into teams to find anything odd, such as alien sightings. Kyon is paired up with Asahina-san, while Haruhi, Koizumi and Yuki go thier own way. Instead of searching around town, Asahina and Kyon go to a park to talk…

Kyon learns more of Haruhi’s existence from Mikuru-san…who happens to be one them–as in whatever Yuki is–an alien! Mikuru cannot say all of Haruhi since she is under order from whatever organization she works for. At least Kyon is fully aware of Haruhi’s antics. Kyon realizes that he’s late in calling Haruhi, so he gets “penalized”. The “search” continues, this time Kyon and Yuki are grouped; Haruhi is pissed. The next day at school, the brigade newbie Koizumi also has some information on Haruhi to Kyon… What’s going on?

Well, this episode sheds some light on why Haruhi is–so to speak–out of this world. I’m taking my time watching this show while trying to catch up on other series. I think this show is worth a proper review once I’m done with it. I still think it’s overwhelmingly overrated, and I don’t think I’ll ever get the hang of the Haruhi dance.
