Clannad (Anime) [Review]

Summary:
A few months ago, I checked out an episode of the anime, Clannad. I thought this was going to be yet another overrated anime featuring moé-icious Shoujo, like Kanon. Well, this show does have such girls. While the girls appear attractive to male fans of the series, this show appeals to everyone with a sense of drama and the paranormal.

Review:
The first episodes starts off with an abstract with a narrative from the main character, Tomoya Okazaki, about how life sucks. After the intro, we see our hero attending his first day of high school. He hangs out with a roommate who gets into a lot of trouble with the school bullies. Enough about the apparent only male characters of the show, let’s talk a bit about the girls.
The girls at the school the main character attends, Tomoya Okazaki are special: one is a peacemaker, the other one likes to pick fights with the boys, one is a bit smart and likes to do fortune telling, and the girl that Tomoya befriends, Nagisa Furukawa, is shy and has a paranoid personality. Tomoya interacts with each one of the girls through the whole episode, a’la an episode of Haruhi. There’s even a moment in the series where one of the girls fight off a bully in a stylized scene out of an Girls-with-Guns anime. However, that thought only appears to the viewer, while spectators only see her kicking the bully up in the air.
My analysis of Clannad: The first episode of Clannad starts off smoothly. Since this anime left me in doubt as I expected the series to start with obvious “money shots”, it didn’t. I must admit the story sticks out more than the girls, but the whole idea of Moé-ish girls in a show like this annoys me.
Normally, I usually do reviews after finishing the whole series. As of this review, Clannad has been licensed by ADV films. I was originally going to do an Impression overview (reviewing a part of the series that has been enjoyable so far), but I thought this was a good time to introduce the series for those looking forward to the series.
It looks like a decent series to get into, but it’s a series that I couldn’t watch in one viewing. Although it might be worth checking out from a library (if they’ll allow a series such as this–you know, with the girls *sweats*), or after a long wait for a Complete Collection release.

I liked the series, though halfway through it went off on some tangent, and then came back. I’m not really into the whole drama anime series types, but this one kept me entertained throughout. I think the whole, watching the different girl’s personalities evolve got me curious to see it through till the end.
