Normally, Interesting Find is a series where I discuss the interesting Otaku merchandise I obtained that you would never expect to find laying on the shelf at your local anime store. With my warehouse a little cluttered right now to show anything else, and the lack of funds to buy anything else at the moment, here is something interesting that I found while watching a documentary of a South Korean celebrity.

If you haven’t read it, the latest Ni-Ongaku Spotlight featured Korean actor Jang Geun Suk who is currently the top Hallyu star in Japan. In the post, I mentioned that Geun-chan was possibly a fan of One Piece, along with his puppy, as reported by allkpop. On New Year’s Day, KBS2 aired a documentary, “25 Years Old: I Am Jang Geun Suk“, chronicling his November CRI Show: The Beginning tour in Japan at the Tokyo Dome, Osaka, and Saitama, as well as a look into his career and personal life when he’s not in front of a camera.

Towards the end of the documentary, I couldn’t help but notice the obvious devotion to One Piece, and from the looks of it… Bleach, in his room.

From the left, it looks like a figure of Luffy (not to ignore what looks like a stack of manga to the left). On the middle-right, it appears to be another figure of Luffy… and to the very far right in the shadows, it appears to be a figure of Bleach’s Ichigo. Of course, he’s surrounded by the two Choppers on the couch.

What’s so special about this? Well, considering he makes a good Tsundere archetype (see Hwang Tae Kyung in You’re Beautiful), this puts a smile on my face. Though I don’t know too much about One Piece to find an example character that would fit him. If he’s a Bleach fan as much as he is of One Piece, then I hope to see him make references to this character. With his image, I doubt that would happen. But all he needs to do is channel Tae Kyung.

あけましておめでとございます! (Happy New Year!) Welcome to the first Journal entry of 2012! It’s been since October when #19 was published. Honestly, not much has happened in the two months aside from the excitement of helping out with Chattanooga’s latest anime convention, Anime Blast Chattanooga, and attending Anime Weekend Atlanta before it. To get back on track, I plan on not doing anything this year, though I do plan on reading New Year’s greetings from my favorite industry celebrities, and a look back of the Top 3 Favorite News Stories of 2011.

(No Immediate) Plans for 2012

Normally, I’d post my expectations of the new year and talk about improvements from the last. I am going to skip that this year. I realized that the expectations of the past is the same every year–with the exception of finally getting to talk one-on-one with voice actors for interviews on the blog! If it weren’t for the bad weather in the Southeastern US back in the late Spring, everything would have been done on time, which I felt was the problem that held me back, on top of everything else personal-wise. The only goal this year is to stop anticipating when it will happen, but to push through without surprises, surprising both myself and the readers.

With that said, and with this being said for the last time: everything that was expected, will happen at some point. Please keep a look out for them! ^_^

New Year (and Christmas) Greetings

Like last year, and now a tradition since 2008, Anime News Network is publishing a compilation (14-parts and growing) of New Year greetings from Japan’s leading industry celebrities. In last year’s Issue #10 of the journal, Tetsuya Nomura posted a congratulatory tweet of the new year, along with rare Twitter decor featuring Kingdom Hearts. My favorites so far this year is a 9-minute long (cooking?) video from Hiroaki Hirata, the voice of Kotetsu T. Kaburagi from 2011′s hit anime, Tiger & Bunny, and the poster featuring the girls of K-ON!, as seen above (via the Japanese portal, 0taku).

ANN also has a 9-part series of Christmas greetings from official websites, blogs social networks of series and creators.

Top 3 Favorite News Stories of 2011

The Fall and Rise of TokyoPop: The next biggest story to break in 2011 is the discontinuation of TokyoPop‘s North American division. This meant that titles that were still being released (Axis Powers Hetalia, for example) would no longer see the light of day until another publisher steps in to rescue them, as FUNimation did with Pioneer/Geneon‘s properties. The decision to close TokyoPop’s American operations was due to founder Stu Levy‘s ambition to make films, starting with one on focusing on Japan.

Fans were saddened and eventually outraged of the decision, just when they previously announced their website redesign, removing user-created content in the process. However, 7 months later, a shocking announcement was made of TokyoPop’s intention of returning to the manga publishing business, beginning with the GeekChicDaily newsletter. A little too late, in many opinions of fans, when there were already a few publishers saving TokyoPop’s former titles.

Epic Comebacks: A favorite news story–or several–from last year comes from a personal speculation of the return of favorites from the past such as the re-release of Mobile Suit Gundam. However, there’s a few undocumented events on the blog that has happened: Dragonball Kai ends in Japan–with the exception of the final episode; the original Dragonball Z series complete with the seventh and final Dragon Box released in the States–along with a current HD release in individual BD volumes; the re-release of Metal Gear Solid‘s 2 and 3, along with the portable Peace Walker, in HD… also adding Zone of the Enders at a later time; and the recent re-release of Sonic CD.

That’s not all: this also meant that a few titles from Square-Enix from a little over a decade ago would see the light of day for new generation of fans: Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts. Final Fantasy X will be released for the PS3 (language usage note: as a HD remaster, not a remake) and the upcoming Playstation Vita system, with Kingdom Hearts in the near future… or whenever Nomura feels like it.

Oh, re-releases, re-releases, re-releases. The hope of a re-release of these properties, both anime and games, were high, but it’s scary and pleasing to think that it would actually happen! What else should we demand to return? Oh… I think I forgot to mention the Silent Hill HD Collection and the Mobile Suit Gundam novels coming in April.

The End of Borders: Last year is also the year that Borders would be gone forever. Borders, or Waldenbooks in some places, was THE place to buy manga. I even participated in the Borders Rewards programs, which earned me a few free volumes of manga here and there. That era came to an end in 2007 when the Waldenbooks at our Hamilton Place Mall closed, along with the location in Hixson at the Northgate Mall. The only place left was Books-A-Million, whose parent company now owns the remaining handful of Borders stores in the country.

The closure of Borders is a possible sign that hard media is dying due to the demand of tablets and other digital alternatives. It is said that Barnes & Noble is next on the chopping block–though I’ve learned that B&N is everyone’s least favorite chain with their expensive membership program. But I digress.

In related news: our beloved Books-A-Million on Gunbarrel, the next place I went after Waldenbooks’ closure and our former location of our Boogie BAM Anime Jam anime club–now Scenic City Anime & More, closed its doors in mid-September.

The Saimoe Tournament has been Japan’s 2ch tradition since 2002 where fans vote for their favorite (female) anime characters. Like with any other character tournament, the characters are put into brackets and face off against other characters in a fight to the top. Those who can’t read Japanese, others have adapted their own Saimoe tournament in their own languages: from Korean, to Chinese, and in English, which is where the International Saimoe League comes into play.

I’ve never followed the Saimoe, though the original 2ch tournament is reported on Anime News Network as it happens. For the ISML, they have done something that should have been done a while ago, thus the reason why I never focused on it in the first place: the addition of male characters.

Mio from K-On!, winner of the ISML 2010 tournament.

For the unfamiliar, it looks the tournament itself caters to only female characters because of “moe” in the subject. Not necessary… anymore, at least. There are “moe” male characters too, but there are plenty of manly ones that can help themselves. The reason why I don’t follow the “traditional” Saimoe is because there aren’t many female characters that I favor. The female characters I’d vote for are likely to get wiped out in early rounds (i.e.: Winry, Rukia, and Bulma) where there are more female characters I dislike (Soi Fon, Lust, and Haman, if either of them are Saimoe material), for example… with the exception of Mio from K-On! who won the ISML title in 2010. There are more males that I favor over females, which make it worth while. And the fact that I’m female is evident enough why I’m crazy over these developments.

The ISML’s mens exhibition tournament is just the beginning after mirroring the original Saimoe as a way to kill the time until the next tournament for 2012. The tournament started December 6th and is currently in the finals with 2 rounds remaining. Voting days are on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and last 24 hours each day. For the roster, check out the standings area. Being thrown into the excitement of the Saimoe at the last minute, there is still a lot to learn. I must say though that it’s better than the character battles on GameFAQs where either a FFVII or a Nintendo character wins every year: the ISML has a few FFVII characters in the mix, but I have yet to see more… If he’s in, I’m obliged to support Auron for 2012, but what are the odds of that happening? Of course, my support goes to Byakuya and Vegeta as well, but how far will they go?

Picking up Ni-Ongaku Spotlight again, I wanted to talk about a rising Korean Wave actor who is currently trending above all the others in Japan (in before AKB48) and recently had a sold out concert at the Tokyo Dome. His name is Jang Geun Suk (or Keun Suk), who rose to fame after staring in the 2009 Korean drama, “You’re Beautiful“, and had a cameo appearance in the recent Japanese adaptation of YAB, “Ikemen Desu Ne“.

While he appears more on the screen, he has released a few songs in his home country of South Korea, fulfilling his duty as an Idol; the latest “Gotta Getcha“, “Just Drag“, and the song that introduced me to Geun Suk, “Black Engine“. In terms of his acting career, Jang Geun Suk got his start in advertisements since he was a child. He appears in this ad at the age of 13 with a young BoA back in 2001. He also stars in the 2009 movie, “The Case of the Itaewon Homicide“, where he speaks English throughout the film. Geun Suk himself studied English in New Zealand as a teenager.

Jang Geun Suk kicked off his Japan dominance in Every Little Thing‘s mini-drama PVs for “Moon” and “Star”, and appeared in ad campaigns before touring the country. The most notable this year is of Suntory’s Makgeolli (rice wine) alcoholic beverage, which I find to be one of my favorite ads! He has appeared in the women’s magazine An An that is said to be equal of Playgirl, featuring Japan’s male celebrities in intimate moments. However, the scans show him stripping his neck area. He appears to be a fan of One Piece.

Reading the cast list for You’re Beautiful, I had no idea that this was the very same man of Black Engine. In the drama, he plays the lead singer Hwang Tae-Kyung of the fictional band, A.N. JELL (featuring Lee Hong Ki of FT Island as Jeremy, Yong Jung Hwa of CN Blue as Kang Shin Woo, and actress Park Shin Hye as Go Mi Nam), showing his impressive singing range. Which brings us to his first Japanese single, “Let Me Cry”; according to his bio, one of his favorite artists is L’arc~en~Ciel. He does sound a bit like Hyde in this song. ^_^

2011 marks the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. It felt like yesterday when he was only 10 years old after Sonic Adventure was released, and it felt like minutes ago when I played Sonic CD, which will be re-released (again) for Playstation Network, Xbox Live, and a load of mobile devices. About damn time. In addition, Sega is re-releasing the soundtracks for the original games. Soundtracks for the newer Sonic games have been reissued for the 20th anniversary, but it’s these 3 games that hold so much nostalgia.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Soundtrack

Comment: Now is the chance to own a copy of the original soundtrack of the game(s) and not search for the original prints of the CDs on eBay for twice the price. But, of course, there are a few bonuses that come with this, such as prototype tracks from both games. The soundtrack was composed by Dreams Come True’s Masato Nakamura.

The soundtracks for the first two Sonic games were on my low priority list, until a couple of years ago, thanks to drowning the tracks out due to my obsession for Sonic CD’s US and Japan/Europe STs. It was after I read about the history of Sonic on a little Sonic database, called The GHZ. I have not heard anything from DCT until I read that page–and I kick myself for not doing so sooner. DCT is still around, but it’s all about their earlier albums from their debut in 1989. さよならを待ってる (Sayonara wo Matteru) sounds A LOT like a zone track.

Sonic CD 20th Anniversary Soundtrack

Comment: To those waiting for the re-release of Sonic CD, note that it does NOT include the soundtrack from the US release composed by Spencer Nilsen. If you grow fond of the Japanese soundtrack, or preferred the original from the beginning, now is your chance to own the soundtrack in the 2010s.

It’s a shame that it doesn’t include the US soundtrack, but there’s no problem being a fan of both versions. Take your pick: Cosmic Eternity or Sonic Boom. There is something that remains from the US version, which is the “Past” music that was left in due to programming differences. You’ll be able to hear the the Past Palmtree Panic or Wacky Workbench regardless.

For those heading to Anime Blast Chattanooga next weekend, I will be hosting the Gundam: From After Colony to Anno Domini panel. If you’re only familiar with the next-generation Gundam series such as Wing, SEED, and 00, then get ready to explore the world of Gundam!

Attending this panel, you’ll more about the era that started it all, Universal Century, and the many spinoffs and movies in the franchise’s 32 year history, including some either necessary or unnecessary side-stories and anything else that will fit into the hour time slot! And if you’re ready for more Gundam, this is the perfect time as there’s a brand new Gundam series, Gundam AGE, currently airing in Japan, along with the release of the fourth episode of the Gundam Unicorn OVA, and the impending re-release of previous series that’s happening in 2012.

For a brief exploration of the past Gundam series, check out my (typo riddled and in need of updating) Gundam 101 series I published two years ago, exploring the series and movies based on suggested watching order. But the best place for new Gundam information, in the next week, will be at the panel, and of course, CEN.TAKU.ME!

This is the second attempt of spreading the love of Gundam since Connooga early this year. Due to the technical difficulties and the logistics of the convention, there were fewer people than expected. But at Anime Blast, I hope everyone, and those who missed it at Connooga, will get the chance to share such an amazing franchise. ^_^

–

Anime Blast Chattanooga is less than a month away! On the eve of Anime Blast’s successful promotion run at Anime Weekend Atlanta, the third round of guests were announced. While this is a little late, it could be very timely for those looking for a last-minute convention right after AWA; whether they missed out or need just one more convention before the end of 2011. Check out the press release below to see who they are! ^_^

With the con quickly approaching, a beta schedule will be released later in the week! The latest news will be published here on CEN.TAKU.ME, and of course, on Anime Blast Chattanooga’s official website!

CHATTANOOGA, TN – September 26, 2011 – Anime Blast Chattanooga is pleased to present our third round of guest announcements. Voice actor/musician Eric Stuart, veteran cosplayer Jo Envel, and The Man Power, a self-described “comic book rock n’ roll” band, will be joining the previously announced guests Todd Haberkorn, Colleen Clinkenbeard, and musical guest My Parents Favorite Music at Anime Blast Chattanooga!

ERIC STUART

Brooklyn born and raised singer/songwriter Eric Stuart has toured the country either on his own or with such rock legends as Peter Frampton, Ringo Starr, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He’s also opened for such acts as Jethro Tull, Julian Cope, Hall and Oates, and Chicago.

His first full-length album, Curiosity, was released in 1996 on his own independent label, Widow’s Peak Records, and was soon followed up in 1997 with Picture Perfect World (EP).

In the summer of 1997, Eric’s classic rock & roll style was noticed by Ringo Starr who invited him to open The Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band Tour, featuring Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Brooker (Procul Harum), and Simon Kirke (Bad Company). That exposure served as a springboard for Eric to open for the Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Paul Rodgers Tour that same summer.

Since then Eric Stuart has been touring on a regular basis including two U.S. tours with Peter Frampton.

In 2000 Frampton produced Eric’s next album, Blue, Dressed In Black along with John Regan and Harvey Jay Goldberg.

Now living in Nashville, Eric’s songwriting talents have given him the opportunity to begin co-writing with some of Nashville’s finest songwriters.

In 2004 Eric released the self-produced independent album Bombshellshocked on RevUp Records. In 2007, he released his next album entitled In The County Of Kings and In 2009 Eric Stuart Band released the next CD ‘Empty Frame Of Reference’, both on Widow’s Peak Records.

In March 2001 Eric Stuart Band released their new album entitled ‘Falls On Me’.

All this while continuing a successful voice acting/directing career, starring in hit shows including Pokemon (Brock, James), Yu-Gi-Oh! (Seto Kaiba), Slayers (Gourry), Viva Pinata, Ultimate Muscle, Dinosaur King (Dr. Z), Kirby, Slayers (Gourry), Chaotic, Sonic X, TMNT, GoGoRiki, in addition to voicing many national radio and TV commercials and audiobook narrations for Audible.com.

Envel

After winning Best Master at Ohayocon this year, Envel will be adding this award to her impressive list that keeps growing. She has won titles like Best Master at MTAC (2009 and 2010), Best Master at Ohayocon (2010 and 2011), Best in Show at Anime Detour (2007), and that is just to just to name a few. She has been going to conventions for 10 years and cosplaying 9 of those years. She also enjoys cake.

You can find her at American Cosplay Paradise (ACP) at http://www.acparadise.com/acp/display.php?a=70247

The Man Power

The Man Power is the greatest comic book rock n roll band of all time. Hailing from Nashville, TN, the band has been forming a fan base through playing anime conventions, Japanese cultural events, rock n roll clubs, private parties, and anywhere that loves fun. The group’s live show consists of a hight level of crowd interaction, undeniable charm, tongue and cheek stage gimmicks, and frequent celebrity cameos.

The musical style of The Man Power is a cross between glam rock, 3 chord punk, and Saturday morning cartoons. Their songs’ subject matter range from girls to anime to just wanting to take a girl to Japan.

The band has shared the stage with such acts as 80s pop icon Tiffany, Japanese punk legends Peelander-Z, rock opera heroes The Protomen, and controversial dance rock act The Slants.

The band has played at events catering to over 9,000 attendees all over the country, were voted band of the month at The Deli Nashville for April 2011, and have played shows with 3 separate Power Ranger actors in attendance!

The Man Power consists of Chris Sexxx on lead vocals and guitar and Cody Warhammer on drums and vocals. At many appearances, the band also features a revolving line up of Man Power Girls that act as hype girls and are the best mascots around! Lady Lauren and Anime Anna are the lead girls, but you never know which girls will turn up at a show with the boys.

After self releasing its first EP, “The Man Power,” the band blew away the world with their debut full length record, “Hide Your Daughter and Get Your Earplugs Here Comes The Man Power,” in 2011 on Man Power Records. The album is a representation of the band’s roots and a glimpse into the future.

So what else is there left to say? The Man Power is your new favorite band! Don’t miss the band when it is in your town because if you do you might never see your girlfriend again.

Steve Jobs: 1955-2011

On Wednesday, October 5th, 2011, the founder and former CEO of Apple Computers, Steve Jobs, passed away at the age of 56. It is a huge loss in the technology world as he shaped how we use computers and phones, and how we listen to music and watch television digitally.

It began nearly two months ago when Jobs announced his permanent departure from Apple, which shocked many despite his huge success with the company. Speculations of his departure included his failing health due to his bout with pancreatic cancer, which resulted in his previous leave of absences. Unfortunately, this seemed to be the case.

It doesn’t matter if we are Apple, Windows, or Linux users, there is so much we can think of to thank him for making possible in the new digital age. Rest in peace, Steve.

AWA 17 Recap On The Way!

It’s been a week since the 17th Anime Weekend Atlanta wrapped up. As with every convention, it took a lot out of me for a couple of days–and it was a time when I wished I took a few bottles of 5-Hour Energy with me. /facepalm

With this said, a recap of AWA 17 is on the way. But with so much activity happening on our end, as in helping promote Chattanooga’s upcoming anime con, Anime Blast Chattanooga, the recap might be a little short… with the exception of interviews with Todd Haberkorn and Vic Mignogna.

In the meantime, I’ll be posting Anime Blast news, including an announcement on the Gundam panel, so stay tuned to CEN.TAKU.ME for more information in the coming days! And speaking of Anime Blast, thank you to those who dropped by our ABC booth at AWA! ^_^

Sanjo Visits Tokyo Tower FM!

I normally find myself comfortable behind the scenes writing, but I don’t mind making vocal appearances on podcasts and on local radio stations!

On Wednesday, September 28th, I appeared for the first time on Tokyo Tower FM on Chattanooga State’s <strike>91.5</strike>* WAWL, hosted by friend of CEN.TAKU.ME, Zippy! The theme of the episode focused on getting ready for Anime Weekend Atlanta! It was a full house as Zippy, BobbyP (Shizuo), Kurosaki (Izaya), Shouyume, and myself (Bright) shared moments from AWA in the past, as well as our <strike>itinerary</strike> to-do list for this year’s AWA. Did I hint that a few of us were in cosplay? ^_^

Last week, BobbyP and I returned to the show to discuss our favorite moments from AWA 17, which was just as fun as the pre-AWA show. It was a lot of fun during the week of con preparedness here in Chattanooga, adding our Scenic City Anime & More pre-AWA meeting and the retelling of our adventures the week later. It’s going to be a lot of fun leading up to Anime Blast, which is just a few weeks away…

* [Note: The WAWL is now only available online at WAWL.org. Tokyo Tower FM is on every Wednesday night at 9 to 11 PM.]

It’s officially a week until the 17th year of Anime Weekend Atlanta kicks off! I will be attending the convention this year for the first time in two years, and the first time attending as a member of the press at AWA. Though I applied for press last year and I was unable to make it at the last minute, I had success at MTAC Goes to 11 as press. Although I have interviewed just one guest, Eric Stuart (for the podcast episode that has officially entered the editing phase), I intend on expanding to others at AWA!

The target list includes Naoko Matsui, Todd Haberkorn, Vic Migongna, and The Suzan. Due to other personal commitments and the scheduling rules, I am unable to personally interview the remaining guests. (I really wish I could, though! This is something to think about as I juggle as a fan and a member of the media…)

If you are attending Anime Weekend Atlanta, but cannot make it to the Q&A events, or cannot make it to AWA at all to ask questions, ask them here! All you have to do is comment in the post below with your question(s) to the guest(s), and I’ll make sure to ask them during the interviews. If you prefer not to ask them in the comments, email them to me via the contact page.

Stay tuned to CEN.TAKU.ME on Twitter and Facebook for coverage of Anime Weekend Atlanta 17! If you use a feed reader, subscribe to the blog via RSS.
