Common MMOG Etiquette and Terminology

This is a list of rules and common terms used in Online Games. I compiled these from my knowledge of playing Ragnarok.Online, Final.Fantasy.XI, Gunbound, and others. This is a must read for people who have yet to play an MMOG.

-Gaming Etiquette-

  1. Do not beg for items or in-game currency.
  2. Also by begging, other players will disrespect you, and it would be hard to make friends. It is easy to get items and money on your own. Just keep playing and you will reward yourself.

  3. Do not spam.
  4. No one wants to see a advertisements on their screen! Repeated spamming will get you banned. Also, do not use spam to make a person leave the party/room/guild. This similar situation has happened to me on Gunbound, but I ignored them. If this happens to you, just block them using a macro created by the game’s developer. (i.e.: In Final.Fantasy.XI, use /blacklist add playername)

  5. Do not steal kills.
  6. This is also called “KS” for short. Kill Stealing is taking another players target without permission and takes away half, or all depending on the game, experience points to the stealer. Kill stealing takes away the fun from the game. Repeated uses of Kill Stealing can result in a temporary or permanent suspension. If you hit another player’s target by mistake, just say sorry. :)

  7. Do not use third-party (illegal) programs.
  8. Use of third-party programs are against the game developer’s rules. This will also take away fun for other players. For example: In Ragnarok.Online, there are reports of players using bots. These bots can attack a monsters and warp to another area of populated mobs. Bots can also warp away when another player (or bot) comes in contact of the screen, regardless of a Thief’s “Cloak” skill being used. Use of these types of programs can result in a permanent suspension from the game.

  9. Be nice to other players.
  10. If a player asks you for help, try to help them as best as you can. Do not insult them for being a weak character. By helping out others, you will get a good reputation in the community. :)

-Common Terms-

  1. GJ
  2. “Good job!” (All)

  3. NS
  4. “Nice shot!” (Gunbound)

  5. TNL
  6. “To next level.” (Final.Fantasy.XI)

  7. PT
  8. “Party” (Final.Fantasy.XI)
