Gurren Lagann Debuts on SciFi

The Gurren gang on *real* US television. Sorry, Adult Swim

The biggest anime of 2007 aired for the first time on US television, on the SciFi Channel Monday night. Thanks to my trusty DVR, I witnessed the first episode of Gurren Lagann. I’ve contemplated watching this show for a while, and the fact the my friends have been telling me I should watch this show. I couldn’t bring myself to watch the fansubs; maybe it’s because it was licensed almost immediately thanks to growing interest in the community.

I was satisfied with the SciFi airing, and I’m looking forward to more episodes. At first I thought the voice actor for Si`mon was Vic Mignogna, but it was Yuri Lowenthal (Sasuke in Naruto). Kyle Hebert and Michelle Ruff were other voices I recognized. I think Vic could have done a better Si`mon, but listening to Yuri’s performance, I don’t think Vic could make his voice that high pitched. All in all, the English dub is decent. I plan to write more detailed impressions later in August. There was another anime I could have been interested in if I knew about it sooner; Now and Then, Here and There. Dish Network’s guide said “Now and Then” the week before. I thought it was some imported SciFi show from Canada. Oh well, I’ll check it out some other time.
