International Saimoe League’s 2nd Annual Male Tournament

Code Geass: R2

Last year, I wrote about International Saimoe League’s inaugural Male Tournament, which is a first for the league (to myself after learning of this) as the tradition of a Saimoe tournament features female characters (hence the “Moe” suffix). There’s not many female characters I favor to enjoy it. But I’m thankful for the addition of a tournament of male characters as a fangirl. With the success of the first event, with Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass) the victor, the tournament returns for another year.

The tournament started on November 27th, and will go on until December 6th. Voting is held every two days on their voting page: voting the first day, lasting 24 hours, with the results posted afterwards. The tournament began with 96 characters. With the conclusion of first round, 32 characters remain.

Voting Schedule:

  • Day 1: 1500 GMT, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 (Done)
  • Day 2: 1500 GMT, Thursday, 29 November 2012
  • Day 3: 1500 GMT, Sunday, 2 December 2012
  • Day 4: 1500 GMT, Tuesday, 4 December 2012
  • Day 5: 1500 GMT, Thursday, 6 December 2012

There seems to be fewer characters in this year’s tournament. Probably because of the characters that didn’t make it last year weren’t bothered to be nominated this time. For example: Dragonball Z’s Vegeta received under 1,000 votes last year… around 930, if I recall (insert meme reference if you’d like). I guess he does not qualify in a game featuring mostly Bishonen characters. Of course, characters that performed the poorest were likely left out to make room for newcomers such as Tetsuya Kuroko (Kuroko no Basuke).

Out of the several favorites in the tournaments, I am rooting for Bleach’s Byakuya Kuchiki. Since Vegeta, Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop). or Kotetsu Kaburagi (Tiger & Bunny) are not present, he has my full support. Lelouch, winner of last year’s tournament, is back. It would be interesting to see him win for a second time. But if Byakuya were to win, I wonder if it would be due to the change of heart from fans after him appearing more supportive overall, or sympathy after the events of Chapters 501 and 502.
