Natsume Yuujinchou: A Show with an Alphonse Clone

There’s a new anime is currently airing in Japan called Natsume Yuujinchou that looked interesting after finding this poster…At first, It looked a lot like a show that looks alike another one I had in mind. It wasn’t what I expected it to be.

Natsume Yuujinchou is about a young girl–or boy–named Reiko Natsume, who can see things out of the ordinary. These “things” are Youkai, which are monsters that originated from various Japanese folklore. The anime appears to be based–or wants to be based–on a book..or in other words, other anime series.

The anime I was hoping for when I saw the promotional poster was a new series based on (wait for it) Fullmetal Alchemist, as Reiko happens to look a lot like an older Alphonse from the Hagaren movie, Conqueror of Shambala. It seems FMA wasn’t the only anime it’s attempting to copy; it also has the elements of Mushishi, Inuyasha, and When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni).

I watched a bit of it to see if it’s worth watching. Unfortunately, it’s too slow and obvious for my taste. And as mentioned, it too similar from other anime series. Maybe the animators thought if they could make the characters designs smooth as in Fullmetal Alchemist, it would get attention. It caught mine…too bad it isn’t the real thing. The only nice thing about the show is the cute mysterious cat.
