Anime Watcher’s Journal [October 2007 - Issue #2]

October is coming to an end. I came across some good anime this month, including shows that are still on the air, with new opening and ending themes. Let’s check out what I have been watching, shall we?

Mahoromatic

Mahoromatic is about an android sent to earth, working undercover as a maid. However, she has less than a year until she is deactivated. This anime has a lot of fan-service, which is odd … I’m no stranger to fan-service, but the amount of it surpasses that of “Love Hina “Tenchi Muyo!”, and a couple of “unmentionable” anime. The show is funny; I like how the grudge of Suguru’s teacher and Mahoro gives the series a different tone, from what will unfold later in the series.

Bleach

Episode 144 brings in a new opening theme from the J-Rock band, Asian Kung Fu Generation, “After Dark”. This is their first song for Bleach, in addition to the theme songs for Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist. The episode also kicks off the rescue efforts of Ichigo, Uryu, and Chad to save Orihime in Hueco Mundo. The fight between Soul Society and Hueco Mundo is underway, but until then, Soul Society’s very own are getting prepared. However, it seems that every time they make progress, an Arrancar causes trouble…

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Not long ago, I gave a brief impression on the latest series in the long running franchise. So far, so good; there are no angsty teenage boys taking up screen time (if you watched the last Gundam series, you know what I’m talking about), and I’m excited about seeing more of the main characters on-going development. The Gundam pilots are awesome, and another thing I totally forgot about Gundam 00 is that the setting takes place during the present era (there could be a Gundam hovering around orbit right now!). An interesting approach for a Gundam storyline. Another notable mention is the opening theme is performed by L’arc~en~Ciel, entitled “Daybreak’s Bell”.

That’s all for this month, but there are many others that I will be checking out and revisiting in November. Such as Doujin Work, Code Geass, Lucky Star, Death Note, and Welcome to the N.H.K..
