Playing “Hero A” Over “Hero B”: Auron Over Sora

When I wrote a post a while back on playing Kingdom Hearts and other console RPGs full-time over MMORPGs for the first time in 5 years, I removed a few paragraphs that I didn’t think was appropriate for the entry. It’s nothing gross–but you could consider it in the range of Moe-ness–but with video games.
The following text may remind some of the side stories in the Genshiken manga; “Our Love is ‘Unbalanced’” (Volume 3) and “Our Favorite Game; Another Stories” (Volume 4), where fictitious fans of the fictional anime series, Kujibiki Unbalanced (くじびき・アンバランス) discuss who’s cuter and powerful when it comes to playing the fighting game based on Kujibiki Unbalanced, “Unbalanced Fighter”…
I didn’t get into Kingdom Hearts at first because I irked at the fact that Disney characters were in it (at the time, I had the mindset of a 12-year old fan
boygirl), but I gave in and brought the game during my initial trip to Chattanooga back in the summer of 2004.When I returned from my trip, I played it all the way up to Agrahba (from Aladdin)… That was when the Ragnarok Online Installation CD arrived, and I never looked back. 4 years later, I’m much, much further ahead (read: Halloween Town) than a long time ago.
Playing Kingdom Hearts for the first time, there wasn’t even any signs of a Kingdom Hearts II. When KHII was officially announced, I was so glad I made the decision to play the game: Auron from Final Fantasy X was confirmed to be a [supporting] character. Since this is a Disney game, you can’t play as a Final Fantasy character over Sora, Donald or Goofy… But seeing Auron again was exciting–especially the return his American Voice Actor, Matt McKenzie. ^_^
That’s the edit from the original post. Not only did I think it wasn’t appropriate, I didn’t feel readers would be very interested in it (being somewhat off-topic). Anyway, thinking back about the whole thing, I felt really spoiled. I’m sub-consciously playing a game to see a character from another game in another game I had no interest in.
Not that I feel bad about it… I just find it amusing that I’m suffering from a moment where a bunch of guys (including two girls, where one is an avid cosplayer and the other who hates anything with “Otaku” written on it) in a small room obsessing over a manga (or anime) series that happens to have a Doujin (fan-made) game with their favorite character in it. Except in this scenario, it’s an real life girl obsessing over an male character.
I guess I finally earned the title of “A True Otaku”.
