What If: …”Yaoibait”?

2010-04-01_00001

With the news about FUNimation’s “controversial” decision to edit their recently licensed series, Dance in the Vampire Bund, there is something that I thought about… that sort of has nothing to do with that particular series, but with the whole idea of “fan service” in mind.

There was a post I wrote last year about how interesting it was to see Vegeta being turned into a fan service mascot of the series-only towards the female audience. At first, I thought I made the mistake of writing “Jailbait” instead of “Yaoibait” (a word that doesn’t exist in a few circles) in the title. It was a good thing I decided to change it the last minute… Of course, I could have left it alone to see what kind of reaction the post would get to the point of “WTF?!” (having to wait another year to post it on a day like 4/1). But I wanted to be as accurate and serious as possible.

“Jailbait” means something totally different than what I was trying to explain in the post. From Urban Dictionary, it means “an underage girl who flirts with an older male”. Therefore, getting him into serious trouble with the law. When it comes to our Anime fandom, that is exactly what it means for “Lolicons”-the worst sub-group of fans to associate with other Anime fans in general, in various opinions; not only that it’s wrong, but just I don’t find it appealing…

The reason behind FUNimation’s editing of Dance in the Vampire Bund is because of the main character, Mina Tepes. She looks like she came out of a Loli doujinshi. But she is actually… well, not young enough to look like that. There were a few more pictures I found of her, but it was hard finding that was “clean”.

Now, “Yaoibait”, another word I was going to use (if it made sense), is a lot safer, so to speak. Anyone defined as “Yaoibait” is of legal age, of course. That means Vegeta meets the requirements. (Or you can replace him with a younger (above) character from Neo Angelique Abyss!). But the “bait” part means that he’s likely to get involved in a odd situation, as artist Rena-sama points out*, especially with the opening of Dragonball GT: Final Bout.
